VIKING Helix evacuation system

A new generation marine evacuation system for simpler operation and service

VIKING Helix is developed for ferries and cruise vessels requiring higher passenger evacuation capacity. The system introduces a helix-shaped evacuation slide that enables continuous passenger descent to liferafts positioned alongside the vessel.

Designed to reduce system complexity, VIKING Helix maintains high evacuation capacity while simplifying operation.

The system can evacuate up to 477 persons within 30 minutes using 153-person liferafts with an extended service interval.

Continuous passenger evacuation with minimal crew handling

Passengers descend through a controlled helix slide that allows several people to be inside the system at the same time, creating a continuous evacuation flow from embarkation to liferafts alongside the vessel.

The system is designed for easy operation with minimal crew involvement. A unique gravity-based bowsing system automatically positions the liferafts alongside the vessel during deployment, eliminating the need for manual bowsing.

Adults and children can evacuate together, and the system accommodates passengers of different sizes as well as stretchers carrying injured persons. The helix design allows the slide to move with the vessel during operation, supporting evacuation even in challenging sea conditions.

Flexible installation across vessel types

VIKING Helix is designed to support a wide range of vessel configurations, and is especially suited for larger ferries and smaller cruise ships.

The system can be installed at heights between 5 and 23 metres, making it suitable for both newbuild projects and retrofit installations on ferries and cruise ships.

Installation does not require welding on the ship side, simplifying integration during both newbuild and retrofit projects. The system also offers superior trim and list flexibility, allowing it to operate effectively across a wide range of vessel conditions.

Simplified service exchange

The system design focuses on efficient servicing. The helix box and liferaft are removed as a single unit, simplifying handling during inspection and servicing. A dedicated service rack supports safe transport and workshop servicing.

Service turnaround can typically be completed within one port call, often within one hour, helping operators minimise operational disruption.
