New PFOS regulations and what they mean for your offshore fire protection

From 1 January 2026, firefighting foams containing PFOS will no longer be permitted in fixed or portable firefighting systems. The IMO amendments adopted at MSC.532(107) apply to both new and existing offshore units, no later than the first survey after the entry into force.

For offshore operators, this is not simply a matter of replacing foam. Firefighting foam is part of a larger fire protection system, and changes can affect system performance, certification, and survey readiness.

Why foam compliance cannot stand alone

Restrictions on PFOS and PFAS are already in place in several countries, with further limitations expected. At the same time, major foam manufacturers are phasing out PFOS and PFAS-based concentrates, making the transition to fluorine-free foam unavoidable for many offshore installations.

This means operators need to consider not only compliance, but also:

  • How restricted foam is removed and disposed of
  • How tanks and systems are prepared for new foam
  • Whether the system still performs as intended
  • How changes are documented for surveys and audits

Handling these steps separately increases risk and operational complexity.

VIKING marine fire service technicians at a foam system

One service for the complete fire protection system

VIKING marine fire service brings firefighting foam replacement into the wider maintenance and certification of offshore fire protection systems.

Rather than treating foam as a standalone task, VIKING manages the transition as part of the complete system. This ensures that existing hardware is prepared where required, compliant foam is commissioned correctly, and system performance is verified after changes.

For offshore installations, this typically includes:

  • Analysis and test of existing foam (for PFAS/PFOS)
  • Safe removal and disposal of restricted foam
  • Cleaning and preparation of tanks and systems
  • Commissioning of fluorine-free replacement foam
  • Testing of the complete firefighting system
  • Documentation and certification for surveys and audits

All work is planned to fit your operational schedule and inspection requirements.
