VIKINGs new triple protection body armour provides 100 protection even when wet

Press release May 2006

Waterborne operating task forces can face very different challenges to their land borne comrades, and their choice of equipment needs to reflect this. There is no time to change body armour in an amphibious landing when under enemy fire.

VIKING thought long and hard about how best to protect the people who protect us and developed the first lightweight triple action body armour that is 100% effective even when wet.

Protecting personnel even under water
Certain defence personnel operate in or around water and need to be sure that their protective equipment will continue to help safeguard their lives even when wet. There is no time to change equipment under enemy fire. If they are wearing body armour then it needs to be lightweight and allow them freedom of movement while protecting them from hostile fire, and body armour needs to be totally effective both wet and dry.

The innovative material used in VIKING body armour is an advanced composite of ultra-high tensile fibres, such as resin impregnated polyaramid (Kevlar material from DuPont) made waterproof by heat compaction. This ensures that it remains 100% effective when wet.

Triple protection from multiple threats
Enemy action comes of course in many forms and body armour needs to be able to withstand multiple forms of threat. VIKING's body armour protects the wearer from bullets and burst fire, knife and spike attacks. An extra layer of foam ensures that energy from a blunt trauma impact is dispersed of a wider area, reducing trauma to the wearer.
