VIKING LIFE-SAVING EQUIPMENT will launch their new offshore personnel transfer system, the Selstair, at this year's Offshore Technology Conference. The full size working Selstair model will be centre stage on stand 4949 alongside VIKING's unique chute evacuation system. The Selstair model, at 5.80m by 3.5m and 6m high, is likely to be one of the most striking attractions at OTC and is expected to attract a great deal of attention. VIKING's new rectangular version of its established Selstair access system was first announced in connection with OTC in 2005 during its development stage and can now be seen at this year's OTC. The new system builds on already proven technology gained from the first circular prototype installed on the Petrojarl Varg in 1997. Significant improvements include the reduction in the number of movable parts, making the Selstair even more reliable and easier to maintain. The new generation Selstair improves access to offshore platforms and rigs Selstair provides safe, reliable and secure access to offshore platforms and installations. A collapsible staircase is lowered either to sea or above sea for transferral to vessel. Non-slip aluminium steps and landings, handrails and net around the staircase guarantee safe passage for all. Safe, controlled and convenient access “The new VIKING Selstair is a safe, controlled and convenient method for accessing platforms and drilling rigs. The system can be remotely controlled and stairs can be easily stored inside their container when not in use. This protects the system from the harsh environment and reduces maintenance to a minimum,” said Lars Bjoland, Technical Manager in VIKING Norway.
